Zambia

GQS are thrilled to announce a groundbreaking development in sustainable energy for Zambia. Our team is embarking on a pioneering solar project that will deliver a clean and reliable power supply of 100 megawatts, in Kumi Kumi Kazungula coupled with state-of-the-art battery storage technology.

This initiative marks a significant stride towards a greener and more resilient energy future for Zambia, harnessing the abundant solar resources available in the region. By combining cutting-edge solar technology with advanced energy storage solutions, we aim to contribute not only to the reduction of carbon emissions but also to the enhancement of energy security and stability in the region. The GQS local team is currently engaged with consultants for the permitting. Land is owned by the holding company with land clearance expected for Q4 for 2024. Stay tuned for updates as we work towards a cleaner and brighter tomorrow for Zambia.

UK company injects $130m into Kazungula solar power plant

By JOSEPH BANDA
renewable energy company, has started GREENQUEST Solutions, a leading British developing a US$130 million, 100 Mega Watts solar power plant in Kazungula District of Southern Province.
The project is being delivered through Greenquest Solution’s local Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), Intelligent Energy Zambia Limited (IEZL)
Project manager Teddy Hambayi said the solar project, called the “Kumi Kumi Zambia Solar Project” was a 100 MW solar farm which would also incorporate two 30 MW battery energy storage systems (BESS) thereby assisting with load shifting, peak shaving and serve as an emergency backup for the local community.
Me Hambayi said the 250-hectare project site in Kazungula was located about 16 km north-east of Livingstone.

Greenquest Solutions chief executive officer Bobby Wahi expressed the company’s excitement about launching their first project in Kazungula.
He said the project was just the beginning of multiple projects that the company planned to develop on the Zambian market.
In addition to the project itself, he said his firm would work alongside the Wattcrowd platform, a new Fintech solution designed to expedite the development of renewable energy projects in emerging markets.
“The pipeline of projects
in the Kazungula region will receive financial support from Wattcrowd, in conjunction with
international external funding sources that will collectively support one GW (gigawatt) of projects planned for 2024 in Africa,” he said.

Wattcrowd general counsel Reuben Cher said the Kumi Kumi Zambia, Solar Project represented not only a significant leap towards clean energy generation but also a transformative step for the region’s economic development.

He said the project was set to usher in a new era of job creation, infrastructure improvement and energy accessibility for local communities. He also stated that Wattcrowd was excited about navigating the legal complexities, as the venture allowed it to collaborate closely with the Zambian Government to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and pave the way for an efficient, eco-friendly energy landscape.
Mr Cher said Zambia had a strategic land linked position in sub-Saharan Africa and IEZL would proactively develop
renewable energy projects to
provide sustainable energy generation solutions to communities in Zambia And IEZL’s chairperson Richman Njovu said, “w are very excited to close this year with a large renewable energy project in one of our key target markets. This is our first major project, and we look forward to supporting the country in achieving its objective to diversify the energy mix. We believe that we can also supply power to other African countries within the region”.

He said the project would help expand the country’s capacity to produce clean
and renewable energy. as well as support the Government’s agenda of the transition to a green economy and promoting the decarbonisation of the energy sector.

Mr Njovu said the project was classified as a priority sector project by the Government and had strong support from Senior Chief Mukuni of the Mukuni who granted IEZL the 250-hectare project site. He said his company recognised the importance of renewable energy in achieving sustainable development, reducing carbon emissions, and ensuring energy security for Zambians.
About 400 jobs will be created during the construction phase and it is estimated that the Kumi Kumi Zambia Solar Project will save six million tonnes of Carbon Dioxide over 20 years.
Soaring teenage pregnancies in North-West a time bomb-PS
By SYLVIA MWEETWA CASES of pregnancies among teenage girls in Kalumbila are increasing and North- Western Province Permanent Secretary Grandson Katambi says he is worried by the development.
Colonel Katambi who described the situation as a time bomb if not controlled quickly, castigated the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) who he said have and have instead
eglected the
other stakeholders to join hands in controlling the vice.
Colonel Katambi attributed the increase in teenage pregnancies to increased mining activities in the province as most girls were enticed into engaging in sexual activities for financial gains.
He said there was a need for various stakeholders to partner with the Goverment in securing the lives of young girls who were getting pregnant before the acceptable time.
